LEADING THE WAY
Leading the way: that’s the message from Cllr Tegwen Devichand following her recent re-election as Council Leader with Llanelli Rural Council, following the local elections.
The council reaffirmed Cllr Devichand’s appointment as Leader at its annual meeting. The council also welcomed seven new members to the fold and Cllr Devichand enthused about the future and how much she was looking forward to building on recent achievements by helping lead the new council in over-seeing its excellent community development work.
Cllr Devichand remarked … “I am proud to have been nominated as Leader of such an innovative and forward thinking council once again. We achieved so much over the previous five years not least the asset transfers of a number of important community facilities from Carmarthenshire County Council including the likes of Dafen Park, Pwll Recreation Ground, Trallwm Playing Fields as well as a number of local play areas. The council’s intervention has meant we can safeguard these important play spaces and facilities from the threat of closure. I am very much looking forward to working with all the elected members on the new council to bring about further community improvements.
“The council will continue with its important collaboration agenda by working closely with Carmarthenshire County Council and Llanelli Town Council. To this end, we will continue to provide a grounds maintenance service to the town council for the parks and playing fields it has asset transferred from the county council. We also have plans to continue to collaborate with the county council by hopefully transferring the former Llwynhendy Education Centre as well as the former Pwll Education Centre. The council has plans to convert these buildings into much needed community centres as well as creating a new play space on Gwili Fields, Llwynhendy.
“There is a lot to look forward to and our focus is all about making quality improvements to have a positive impact on local well-being. We will be looking to consolidate and add value to those facilities recently transferred from the county council as well as looking at extending our reach into the community further still by developing specific community projects with outside bodies. Work on our Whole Place Plan will continue with us addressing a number of community interventions by promoting the creation of street buddies and community flood warden initiatives and also promoting volunteering in the community through the council’s time credits initiative. All in all, there is much to look forward to over the life of the new council”.
