Llanelli Rural Council unveils new Play Areas in Dafen and Bynea

PRESS RELEASE

Llanelli Rural Council is delighted to announce in time for school half term, the opening of two new play areas in Cilsaig, Dafen and Penygraig, Bynea. The play areas have been developed on previously redundant land parcels, transferred from Carmarthenshire County Council, and mark a significant milestone in the council’s ongoing efforts to enhance community well-being.

These new play areas are part of the council’s capital programme, which aims to improve the general well-being of residents across the council’s administrative area during its current lifecycle, running until May 2027. The programme is focused on safeguarding and enhancing important community recreational spaces for residents to enjoy and cherish.

At Clos Cilsaig, new play equipment has been installed in a space that was designated as a play area when the estate was originally built, but has been closed for many years. The new play area features a variety of equipment designed for children of all ages, including swings, a multi play unit with slide, see-saw and a spinning bowl.

Whilst at Penygraig, a space once used as a play area but has been derelict for a long time has been transformed. The space benefits from a ball court, safe pathways and parking, an outdoor gym, zip line, picnic area and play area equipment including swings and multi play climbing kit. The space has also been decorated by local graffiti artist, Jenks, who has provided a mural of popular cartoon characters on the wall facing the play area.

Council Leader, Councillor Sue Lewis, expressed the importance of these new play areas, stating, “We are thrilled to see these play areas come to fruition. They represent our commitment to providing safe and enjoyable recreational spaces for our community. Ensuring that our children and families have access to quality play areas is vital for their physical and mental well-being.”

Council Chairman, Councillor Martin Davies, also commented on the significance of these projects, saying, “The creation of these new play areas underscores our dedication to improving the quality of life for our residents. By transforming redundant land into vibrant community spaces, we are fostering a sense of pride and unity among our residents. We look forward to seeing these play areas become cherished spots for families and children to gather, play, and create lasting memories.”

The council invites all residents to visit the new play areas and experience the positive impact these developments will have on the community. For more information on the council’s capital programme and future projects, please visit Llanelli Rural Council’s website.
