Residents of Clos Cilsaig, Dafen and Penygraig, Bynea will soon be beneficiaries of new children play areas courtesy of Llanelli Rural Council. In recent months the communities at Clos Cilsaig and Penygraig have contributed to consultation surveys that garnered the views in regard to the type of play equipment they wish to see at the spaces identified. This information has been included in a tender document sent to play equipment specialists who will return their designs to the council to consider in February. The proposals set out in the tender would provide play experience for children of all ages and abilities and would revive and enhance the recreational use of the areas for adults and children alike.
The proposal for Clos Cilsaig will be situated in an area formerly used as a children’s play area, a space that has been asset transferred to Llanelli Rural Council from Carmarthenshire County Council. The space identified is a former play area which will be revived for local families and visitors to Dafen Pond to once again enjoy. The value of the scheme will be in the region of £75,000 and will include boundary fencing.
Penygraig play area will also be situated on space formerly used as a play area at land behind Penllwynrhodyn Road. Again this area has been acquired via a Community Asset Transfer process by Llanelli Rural Council from Carmarthenshire County Council. The Council will be contributing £75,000 and a further £45,000 of Section 106 funding has been secured for the play area. Whilst a further Section 106 contribution of £30,000 will be applied for to develop a multi-use ball games area which is to be procured outside of the current tender process.
Cllr Susan Lewis, Leader of Llanelli Rural Council remarked “To have a number of new play area schemes in the pipeline is exciting for our communities. Clos Cilsaig play area has been earmarked for improvement for some time but has been held up by the asset transfer process however this is now resolved and the space can soon be used recreationally again and enjoyed by our youngest residents. The Penygraig scheme is equally satisfying as they have been without a play area for a long time”.
Cllr Deryk Cundy, Chairman of the Council’s Recreation and Welfare Committee stated “I am delighted with what the council has achieved in putting together a funding package in order to deliver these two schemes. The Section 106 funding will enable a broader play offering for the space that is available at Penygraig. I now look forward to the next stage which is sharing the returned play designs with residents for their opinion. This is likely to take place in February”.
